This year at the 82nd annual Academy Awards (3/7), movie stars will be sharing the spotlight with breakthrough technology.

Avatar, nominated for best picture – along with art direction and visual effects – and Coraline, nominated for best animated feature film, were brought to the big screen thanks to innovative 3D printing (or rapid prototyping) technology by Objet Geometries.

For Avatar, James Cameron relied on Objet-created models to plan how his characters fit in Pandora’s lush environment. With 3D printing, the production company Legacy Effects made detailed figurines of each blue-skinned humanoid (see images at right) to test lighting for every camera shot in the movie. The company also used the technology to create a Transformer-like, walking battle armor complete with cockpit.

For Coraline, LAIKA productions used Objet to create thousands of models ranging from cars to doorknobs and food spreads. The technology helped the movie break new ground in stop-motion animation, allowing the character Coraline to exhibit well over 208,000 facial expressions – an extremely significant jump compared to the 800 possible expressions in one of the last stop-motion films to generate buzz, The Nightmare Before Christmas, created in 1993 by the same director.

Latest on rockets against Israel and humanitarian supplies to Gaza

- In the past week over 190 rockets, missiles and mortar rounds were fired from Gaza by Iranian backed Hamas and other militants at Israel. More than 563 were fired since Hamas escalated rocket firing on 4 November. Israel maintained restraint until now hoping for a return to calm.

- The recent escalation is the result of Hamas's decision to renew attacks after the end of the Gaza ceasefire. Since then, Israel refrained from military actions and continued talks with Egypt to broker understandings. Hamas rejected diplomacy and chose to deliberately escalate the situation.

- 250,000 Israelis in the south of the country are in range of rockets from Gaza.

- On Friday, Israel allowed approximately 90 trucks of medicine, fuel, cooking gas and other vital goods into Gaza. The shipment included more than 500,000 litres of fuel and 200 tons of natural gas.

- On Saturday, 27 December, over 50 rockets were fired at the cities of Ashkelon, Netivot, Kiryat Gat, Ashdod and additional communities through the south. Hamas has ordered its operatives to attack Israel with missiles, rockets and mortar rounds. Israeli residents throughout the south of the country have been ordered to remain in bomb shelters.

- An Israeli man was killed on Saturday and four others were seriously wounded when a missile hit a house in Netivot. Another man was seriously wounded when a rocket struck at the community of Mivtahim later in the afternoon.

Background: The Hamas threat to Israel

- Israel withdrew all military and civilian presence from Gaza in August 2005. Since then, more than 5000 rockets and mortars have been fired from Gaza at Israeli civilian neighbourhoods. In the first four months of 2008, the rate of rocket attacks was one every three hours.

- Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza have used the ceasefire declared in June to rearm with Iranian weapons and training. They can call on 15,000-20,000 men.

These constant clashes in Gaza with the tragic loss of life point only to one major problem: The people of the Palestinian Authority are not candidates for statehood at this time and should seek a confederation with one of the Arab states in the region to assist them to create the internal security they desperately need and to bring some kind of normality to their lives.

Possibly after a generation or two, when calm returns and life becomes livable, thoughts can turn to an independent region which could mature into a state alongside Israel

Israel is getting HOT HOT HOT.... yes I refer to the emerging consequences of the Winograd report, but also simply its coming into summer time... no longer do we need those winter lighting requirements burning up our electric... for those we can wait till later in the year.

For now we need to focus on keeping cool (in our political views and in our homes)... our air conditioning units are being given their annual service, filters being cleaned and gas pressure fixed. We're also rummaging around our storage rooms for our fans to dust off ready for maximum summer use. "UNESCO to assess Mughrabi work" is most welcome, and it is a shame the world's media did not ascertain that the excavations are not taking place on the Temple Mount or adjacent to the Aksa Mosque by referring to the historic Ordnance Survey Maps of Jerusalem 1864-65 by Captain Charles W. Wilson R.E. They would have found not only that the ramp leading to the Mughrabi Gate was in existence over 140 years ago, but that the gate was in the house of Abu Seud outside the walls of the Temple Mount.

Furthermore, an enormous lintel was discovered below the gate, covering a closed doorway measuring 20ft x 6ft 10ins and almost 29 ft. in height, at a distance of 275 ft. from the southwest corner of the Temple Mount, but obscured by the ramp. This gate, known as Barclay's Gate, found by James Turner Barclay in the mid-19th century and most likely to be the Kiphonos Gate, one of the entrances to the Temple Mount, is mentioned in the Mishna (Middot 1:3). Regrettably, government spokesmen and the Israel Antiquities Authority fail to publicize this.

A fact never alluded to is that beyond the gate is the underground mosque of Al-Burak, described by Wilson in detail, at a distance of 23 ft. below the level of the Temple Mount and accessed by a flight of stairs from the eastern cloisters. Within the mosque is shown the ring to which "Mahomet fastened his steed Al Burak during his famous night journey" - dispelling all claims that the steed was tethered to the Western Wall, or to any supporting wall of the Temple Mount.

Arab MKs from the Hadash party and Balad's MK Azmi Bishara vehemently oppose voluntary civic service for Arab youth lest it lead to their "Israelization." In Bishara's case this opposition stems from his political indoctrination at Humboldt University in East Germany in the 1980s, where he was taught there is no such thing as a legitimate Jewish state. Indeed, East Germany never recognized Israel and based its diplomatic ties with Arab states upon that principle.

Iran has become like the weather. Everyone talks about it, but no one knows what to do about it. Now Larry Derfner has written an article "Against a preemptive holocaus''. in response to Benny Morris's chilling depiction of how Iran, once it attains nuclear weapons, will use them against Israel and murder us all.

Derfner's speculative contribution lies in warning us not to dare to preempt Iran militarily as that would involve taking millions of Iranian lives. He says we are going to be tempted to do this because it appears that no US administration will dare to take on Iran.

I do not know for certain that he is wrong, but the US has firmly committed itself to not allowing Iran a nuclear option. The US also has means of preemption that are much more varied and accurate than anything Israel has.

I would thus speculate that the preferred and most likely scenario is one in which the US prevents Iran from attaining nuclear weapons. I hope Israel's leaders will not have to come to the decision Derfner believes will be disastrous for us. Of course, not taking action might at that point be even be more disastrous.

1. God gave man free will to choose to do good or evil
2. actions and good deeds are the true prayers producing results while prayers in words only are meaningless to God
3. children are the future of humanity and the most important subject to be taught in school should be creating a successful family life

Monday's suicide bombing in Eilat by a Palestinian should more than suffice to make Israel understand beyond doubt that the cycle of violence and acts of reprisals and counter reprisals will never elicit a final solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict in general and the Palestinian-Israel struggle in particular.

From its inception in 1948, Israel has relied on a policy of carrying out punitive reprisals and, when necessary, defensive offensives to defeat the Arabs militarily. Such a policy worked out well throughout the 1950s and '60s. But the Israeli concept of "strategic depth" has become invalid and useless because today's modern weapons and the Palestinian struggle by human elements have thus far hit almost all parts of Israel.

Furthermore Israeli policy of relying on separation walls, lines of defense and electronic fences will not avail the Jewish state. Israel had better be wise enough to understand that the best option is to solve the core of the Israeli-Arab conflict politically through negotiations and compromise. Otherwise Israel is doomed in the long run, especially if the Iranian nuclear threat is not counted out.

Impetus for the creation of Israel

"the fundamental impetus for the creation of an independent Jewish state was the Holocaust". This is a popular misconception that needs to be challenged.

The "creation" of the Jewish state occurred during the period 1880-1939 as a result of mainly non-religious Jewish emigration from Eastern Europe. During that period, the Jewish settlement in Palestine (the Yishuv) expanded and grew in size and sophistication until it was capable of becoming a Jewish state. In the period 1939-1945, when the Holocaust occurred, the status of the Yishuv remained more or less static.

Between 1945-48, very few of those who survived the Holocaust in Europe actually arrived in Palestine, mainly due to the British, and even fewer participated in the fighting that developed into the War of Independence. Only once the state was proclaimed in 1948 did significant European Jewish immigration resume.

So the concept that the Holocaust was the "fundamental impetus for the creation of the Jewish state" of Israel is a misconception that maybe satisfies the Christian guilt complex. In fact, the Holocaust finally made it clear to all concerned that there was no viable place for Jews in Europe.

Those Jews that left Europe for Palestine in the period 1880-1939 were the ones that built and fought for the creation of the Jewish state; those that survived the Holocaust, having made the unfortunate mistake of remaining in Europe, were their beneficiaries.

Israel MUST Remain Jewish

Israel is unique, a stable democracy that not once in its history has been at peace. It is surrounded by enemies, most of whom deny its right to exist. Although the history of Israel is inextricably bound up with British imperial pretensions (The Balfour Doctrine) and retro-biblical cultism (Zionism), the fundamental impetus for the creation of an independent Jewish state was the Holocaust.

Were I a Jew looking back at the overwhelming cowardice of the gentile world vis-a-vis the plight of my people under Hitler, I would fight to the death for the preservation of the Jewish state of Israel.

It is all well and good to talk about the thousands of loyal Arab citizens of Israel. But there is a fundamental contradiction in that country that we in the US cannot possibly understand. As our nation turns from White to Brown, and Anglo Saxon to Asian and Hispanic, we have nothing to fear because the immigrants and their children can be assumed to accept the core values of our society.

How can non-Jews be expected to adopt the core values of a Jewish state, the most important of which is providing the Jewish people a national safe haven from the periodic attempts to exterminate them?

They go by the euphemistic term Zones Urbaines Sensibles, or Sensitive Urban Zones, with the even more antiseptic acronym ZUS, and there are 751 of them as of last count. They are conveniently listed on one long webpage, complete with street demarcations and map delineations.

What are they? Those places in France that the French state does not control. They range from two zones in the medieval town of Carcassone to twelve in the heavily Muslim town of Marseilles, with hardly a town in France lacking in its ZUS. The ZUS came into existence in late 1996 and according to a 2004 estimate, nearly 5 million people live in them.

Over the last year literally thousands of individuals have read, (hopefully enjoyed) and interacted with me on this Blog.  When I created this Blog, it begun as a bit of fun with a purpose, to bring together two of the oldest and most influential religions to an feeling of mutual trust and discussion.

Researching topics and responding to hundreds of emails takes a lot of time, and what begun as a not for profit 'in my own time' enterprise how now mushroomed into 'a lot of my time' and the need to find recompense.

I contemplated adding a link to request donations, but instead opted to offer paid adverts and reviews occasionally.  I hope this does not offend.

The IDF and government have not found a solution to the Kassam rocket attacks from Gaza. At the same time they offer apoplectic apologies for unintentionally killing non-combatants in Beit Hanun. The government's basic error is not seeming to realize that we are at war with our neighbors.

War means noncombatants killed on both sides. No war was ever won unless the issue of harming noncombatants was not allowed to interfere with aggressive military planning. Israel's obsessive concern over collateral damage will make victory forever impossible, and every military man knows it.

The skewed morality behind this obsession: Having our citizens suffer is less immoral than having the enemy's citizens suffer. Yet in war, as in sports, "Nice guys finish last." Except that in Israel's case, there would be no "next season."

Well-orchestrated Palestinian propaganda forced the council to issue an anti-Israel resolution; only a US veto saved the day. Yet the perpetrators are those who initiated the rocket firing. Israel retaliated and caused civilian casualties.

Israeli IDF thwarted again by the audacity of the Palestinian peoples. Last night the IDF ordered the destruction of a home owned by wanted terrorist Mohammedweil Baroud . As is usual in these situations, the IDF called in the warning to residents to evacuate the home. Usually this is done, the home is destroyed (often the terrorist escapes) and the innocent civilians are saved.

In this situation a new strategy was taken by the terrorist, he fled to a nearby mosque and called on friends and family to act as HUMAN SHIELDS on his home. The IDF called off the strike to avoid killing 'innocent' civilians.

Palestinian terrorists called this action a great victory, thwarting the attack and promised this will now be an ongoing strategy.

The question is why the IDF call in these warnings? why do they give the opportunity for escape and further embarrassment to the military effectiveness.

Tolerance Is Not Enough... Be Proud of Your Religion

We live in a world where tolerance is a buzz word, where we push messages of peace where Jews should respect Christians and Muslims, where Muslims should respect Jews and Christians and where Christians should do the same.

Is this enough ?

I think the most difficult concept is this theory of tolerance and peace when we rarely tolerate our own religion. Islam is split between fundamentalism and modernisation, Judaism is split between zionism and religion and Christianity is becoming split in all areas. In short the three monotheistic religions are losign their own members. Judaism has a concept called Kiruv (Outreach) to bring jews back into the fold. For Christians there is a new service called Catholic Show a website and regular podcast aiming to being Catholics back to into the arms of the Church.

Every religion should embrace tolerance and this could go some way to creating an understanding of peace, but first we must tolerate our own kind. The Catholic Show goes a some way to promoting this concept and is an example to be set to all other religions.

Are Democrats Good for Israel?

Peres Bill - We need reform in the Knesset

I find the "Peres bill" another example of undemocratic Knesset action. The present law allows the Knesset to change voting and election procedures by a simple majority when it suits it ("Olmert tries to put out fire sparked by reform plan," November 12).

Two basic reforms are needed: (1) Election or voting procedure changes must be made by 60% of the Knesset; and (2) they should not come into effect until the following Knesset, and should not apply until after the immediate upcoming election.

We must root out the corruption and self-interest the present law allows.

Is Israel losing its Identity

I would like to remind the elderly, diehard atheist Zionists of Kibbutz Ruhama, who object to the building of a synagogue on their kibbutz, of Ruhama's past history before the present-day kibbutz came into existence.

It was founded in 1912 as the first Jewish settlement in the western Negev, the most southern part of the country inhabited by Jews. The land was purchased on behalf of a group of Russian Jewish religious idealists called Sha'are Israel, who financed its development under the sole management of my late grandfather, Zvi Hirshfeld, a young religious Jew from Riga, Latvia. Together with a group of hard working young Jewish idealists, he prepared for crops, dug a well and built a water tower and other buildings on land legally purchased from local Beduin. Sha'are Israel hoped to come later and settle on the land.

If "Jewish history, the Bible and Jewish thought are all important" to the Ruhama veterans, I would have thought they'd show more tolerance toward a synagogue - one that would, moreover, help increase the profits of their guest house.

Remembering Yitzak Rabin

Gay Parade Goes Ahead

Police Chief Insp.-Gen. Moshe Karadi said Monday that 12,000 policemen would be deployed to man the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade scheduled for this Friday.

Karadi told Israel Radio that his forces would need to receive reinforcements from elsewhere in the country, adding that resultant weakening of forces in other areas was part of the consideration in urging a cancellation of the march.

Israel's Police Chief said that although he respected the right any group's freedom of expression and its right to march, he advised against the Gay Pride Parade going ahead because the tremendous risk to public safety overrode this right.

"We had to weigh up freedom of expression on the one hand against human life on the other, but unfortunately (Attorney-General Menahem) Mazuz told us to find another alternative to canceling the march altogether," Karadi told Israel Radio.

Police were expected to hold emergency meetings early Monday morning with representatives of the Open House, which organizes the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade, to try to reach an agreement on an alternative route for the march in light of the surprise decision by Mazuz on Sunday evening to deny police requests to suspend the march.

During 2008, your correspondent reports, "Israeli and British educators" will tour the UK, visiting schools, universities and Jewish communities, and leading seminars "on a wide range of common experiences." Who will choose these educators and what kind of experiences will they impart to their audiences? It is an undeniable fact that, in the not so distant past, some of Israel's cultural ambassadors have given British listeners a decidedly negative picture of the Jewish state.

This issue will be of particular concern to ex-Merseysiders like myself, since "a large-scale event" is scheduled to take place in our home town, Liverpool, which has been designated "European City of Culture" for 2008.

Is it too much to hope that those organizing the celebrations, headed by Ambassador Zvi Heifetz and Zionist Federation chairman Andrew Balcombe, will for once ensure that Israeli speakers will include a few veteran British olim - the people who are best equipped and motivated to address Jews and non-Jews alike?
