"There can be no long-term normalisation in the Arab world without democracy, and therefore a role for political Islam. But would the West risk the prospect of Hamas's cousins taking power in Egypt? It is the most populous Arab country, is the cultural heart of the region and it controls the Suez Canal. Its peace treaty with Israel is the key to stability in the Middle East.
The Arab world needs more than just elections. It needs to build a civil society and a system of law, and more space for secular opposition groups. Arabs need better choices of leadership than the secret police and the mosque.”
This excerpt above was taken from the UK newpaper 'The Daily Telegraph' THese are true words, but highlight the presipice of irony and obstacle the world faces.
Do we choose to continue exporting and enforcing democracy accross the world effectively placing in government our sworn enemies, or do we instead attempt to continue to try and tame the beasts currently at the helm ?
Whichever route, one thing MUST be paramount to any normalized relations; the cessasion of terror and promotion of peaceful education of the young. Maybe we wont have true peace in our generation, but we can lay the foundations for the next.
This was the mistake Israel made since Oslo, the Palestinian children have continued to be taught from schoolbooks of hate and from teachers that loathe their neighbours.
Shalom for now
